We’ve hit the two-year marker with Rocco and although we’ve already transitioned him into a new room and big boy bed (queen mattress on the floor), it’s far from completion. I know, I know. It doesn’t really matter what the room looks like for the toddler, but some of us mama’s get major satisfaction from cute-i-fying all spaces in our homes. And I’m definitely one of them. If you are too, then you might like to follow along this journey with me to create a modern/rustic hockey room!
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that my son is a die hard hockey fan already! And quite the little aspiring player himself. So, we decided a hockey themed bedroom would be fun and practical, since it will be appropriate for him at any age while he’s under our roof. With that in mind, I’m on a mission to find quality items that will make it through the rough-housing years and align with my love for modern decor.
A few months ago, I found this super cute and quality NHL Western Conference (to include his favorite team, MN Wild, of course) bedding from Pottery Barn Teen. We purchased the coordinating Western Conference sheets and shams to go along with it. The day we put it on his bed, Rocco loved it so much that he brought some toys on it to play for a while. And now each night before bed he picks a different team to crawl over before hitting the pillow. It’s turned into a fun part of our bedtime routine and helpful in getting him excited about going to bed. Which all of you mama’s and daddy’s know is not always easy. Lets hope the excitement lasts!
Finding the bedding was a great start in transforming Rocco’s room into a hockey hub, but there are still a few things on my wish list (wall decor, furniture, painting and more). This weekend I was able to take advantage of some down time and work on one of the projects on my list…a modern/rustic gallery wall.
After a bit of shopping research, I found these frames and marquee “R” (for sale in store only) at Michaels. They are the perfect blend of modern and rustic. I filled the frames with photos of Rocco’s hockey “milestones” so far, including visiting the Stanley Cup with Uncle Paulie, first pond hockey skate with Unlce Kyle, watching daddy’s Osseo alumni game, first Wild game, and skating at the Xcel Energy Center. There are so many ideas for gallery walls out there now, it can be overwhelming to find inspiration. And not many are simple, yet stylish. That’s what I actually love about how this project turned out. I’m hoping to get it up on his wall today!
We also ordered NHL and MN Wild canvas prints from Shop NHL. I just need to find the perfect spot for them and it might take a little shuffling around before I do, since we don’t have the bedroom furniture yet.
I’ll be back to share more progress on projects including, a potential painting project, more DIY hockey room accessories and bedroom furniture. Plus, a look at the completed room (hopefully sooner than later)! If you have any suggestions on where to find affordable modern/rustic bedroom furniture, I’d love to hear!
