After nearly a week stuck inside due to arctic temperatures, Rocco and I decided it was time to get out of the house! So, we asked Grammy D if she wanted to go on a little adventure with us. I thought about checking out Choo Choo Bobs or The Children’s Museum, but the events at both places seemed a little too old for Rocco’s age. Vin suggested Sea Life at Mall of America (MOA), which was a perfect idea for his interests right now. He loves anything to do with water and has recently learned how the fishies move their lips.
In the twelve month phase, one challenge we deal with on outings is making sure we’re back for nap time. Rocco loves and needs his sleep. If he gets out of whack he wakes in the middle of the night crying, which I don’t understand to this day, however I try to refrain from testing it as much as I can, for his sake and ours. We love our sleep too. So, we decided to leave right after breakfast to get the most out of the morning and get back in time for his nap. Grammy met us around 9 a.m. and we got Rocco buckled up in his new car seat and were off!
Yes! We finally got the convertible car seat. For the past few weeks, it was painful trying to get him in his infant seat. He would scream, arch his back and fight with all he had not to sit in that “little” seat (facing backwards). I don’t blame him, after finding out he was 23 pounds at his one-year check up! His legs have gotten a lot longer and quite frankly the kid is just solid, so the straps were growing very tight and the seat was very uncomfortable for him to say the least.
After some research on Vin’s part and mama survey’s on mine, we found a convertible car seat with a lot of the features suggested by other mama’s, along with great reviews required by daddy. The Recaro ProRIDE convertible car set in Aspen was the winner. I liked the tan and black combination because it won’t be too hot with the added tan (made that mistake with the infant seat…don’t go all black). Plus, this color combo coordinates well with the tan and black interior of our SUV. It’s fun when a little bonus fashion-feature comes into play…wink. And most importantly, aside from it’s awesome safety ratings, Rocco loves it!
Ok, back to our adventure! All of the new sights along the way (much different than our family room) sparked his excitement. While strapping him in his big boy stroller inside the mall, his face was stuck in awe-mode as he got into some hard core people watching. One of the best venues to do so, I agree.
After purchasing our tickets, we made our way down to the aquarium at Sea Life. As we walked through each room and finally into the long glass-surrounding tunnel, Rocco’s big oooo’s and aaahhh’s confirmed he was having a great time! Even Grammy and I were entertained and intrigued by the cute little sea horses, enormous sea turtle and squiggly octopus.
After our Sea Life excursion, we went fishing in the mall for some walking shoes for Rocco. He’s been living in his Uggs all winter and needed a good pair of sneakers to practice with inside. He is quick in his grippy socks, but a bit clumsy in regular shoes, so it’s time to get practicing before he puts on his flip-flops and sneakers for our upcoming trip to Florida!
We found a super cute and practical pair at Puma! I love that they are velcro, making them easy to put on. The soles are a very light-weight material, extra grippy and water resistant too. He has a cute pair of Converse, but they are just not functional. The rubber is heavy which makes it hard for Rocco to pick up his feet in this beginner-walking stage. They lace up which isn’t super fun for mom and dad when dealing with a wiggling toddler. So, I am excited to slip him into these easy, cool and fun new kicks!
We had a blast and I can’t wait for our next adventure. Cheers to new adventures big and small in 2014!
